A Švejk, egy derék katona kalandjai a világháborúban című könyv a cseh irodalom ikonikus regénye, a háborúról szóló ironikus fintor, amely az emberi butaságon is túlmutató abszurditása révén alkotó módon találkozik Karl Kraus Az emberiség végnapjai című háborúellenes művével. Ez a két mű a kortárs színház egyik legjelentősebb alkotójának, az amerikai Robert Wilsonnak a keze alatt különleges látványvilágával, metaforikus színpadi képeinek gazdagságával, zenével, színpadi poézis és meghökkentő humor egyedi kollázsává formálódik – mementóvá, példázattá, amely nemcsak a világháború áldozatainak állít emléket, hanem mostani életünkről is szól, melyet száz évvel a huszadik század történetét meghatározó háború után élünk.



The Good Soldier Švejk, the key novel of Czech literature and an ironic insight into war and its attendant absurdity, is creatively juxtaposed in this production with Karl Kraus’s satirical anti-war play The Last Days of Mankind. The modern-theatre wizard Robert Wilson transforms all this into a cabaret replete with scenic images, music and surprising humour in a parable not only of 1914 but also, and primarily, our life today, one hundred years after the outbreak of a terrible war that marked the real start of the 20th century.

The play directed by Robert Wilson will be presented for the first time in the National Theatre of Prague on the 30th April 2014. Eszenyi Eniko plays a major character in it, working together with famous Czech and Slovakian actors. The play will be put on stage at Vigszinhaz from October 2014 but tickets can be booked in advance from May.

2014 is the centenary of the assasination of Franz Ferdinand, crown prince for the Habsburg Monarcy, the outbreak of the First World War.

The National Theatre of Prague, Bratislava and Vig Theatre have been working ona joint performance, directed by the world famous director Robert Wilson, to commemorate this anniversary. The multilingual play, starring Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian actors will be presented to the audience in all three theatres through 2014. The play is the joint adaptation of The Last Days of Mankind by Karl Klaus and Jaroslav Hasek’s book, Sveik.

Robert Wilson is a contemporary American director, who has never directed a play in Hungary before. He has only worked here once on a guest performance, back in 1992. Wilson has been noted among the most significant directors since the 1960, whose new plays always receive international attention. He works together with artists from 5 continents, with many of his former plays shaping the course of contemporary theatre.

The play which is going to be introduced at Vig Theatre this October is not only an outstanding event in the Central-Eastern Europen region but a significant cultural happening in a broader European context, too.
